The Nighttime Sky for MidJanuary-Mid March, 2021:

The Planets:
The planets are taking a respite in the evening and nighttime sky. Mercury is presenting itself however in the evening sky through January but will fade to the morning sky in in mid to late February. Jupiter and Saturn are lost in the glare of the sun during this period. Mars is high in the sky at mid evening but is just of shadow of it beaming glory of last September now just a somewhat bright looking star. Venus is shining brightly in the early morning sky but it too will slowly fade in to the solar glare.

The Heavens
The winter months are home to the might Orion the Hunter which is towering overhead. Within Orion are numerous nebulae including the famous Orion nebula. But there are many more including the Rosette, Horsehead, Flame, Christmas Tree, and the Monkey head. All of these are heavenly jewels when looking through even small telescopes. Also within this region of the Orion Arm of the galaxy is Messier 78, a bright blue nebulous feature. The crab nebula is also prominent, the remnants of a star that exploded. Numerous galaxies are becoming in view with several in and around the Big Dipper including Bode's Galaxy (M81) and the Cigar Galaxy (M82) which looks more like an exploding cigar. The famous Whirlpool galaxy is making an appearance after midnight and then waiting for the end of this period, the 'Triplet in Leo' of 3 prominent galaxies. There are just so many majestic wonders waiting for us to view and they are all in a sky near you. (All the pictures were taken in my 'Heavenly Backyard'.)
